You are who you are when no one is looking

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

“I am beautiful and charming, and that is all my appearance promises. Any in Society who are disappointed when they do not find more cannot fault my countenance. The deception is not mine; they have deceived themselves. But let them continue to look, whether they are fools or no; I rather enjoy it.”

dropped by the bookstore today to pick out something for a friend’s birthday gift, and somehow ended up spending more time among the shelves than originally expected (read: until store closing) hello, self-control?

some interesting reads i spotted:

screenplay of the Mummy which comes with japanese translations, meant for english learners.

having the book would really come in handy in situations such as:
- when you want to make an excuse to leave early, you say “This place… is cursed.”
- when describing someone who has just gotten botox, you say, “He’s fully rejuvenated.”
- when expressing gratitude on behalf of a transplant recipient, you say “[He] thanks you for your hospitality. And for your eyes, and for your tongue.”
mmm nifty.

singapore recipe book – co-written by a group of japanese, endorsed by a french
authenticity is obvious from what is written in the preface “hainanese chicken rice, national dish of singapore originates in hainan, china…

what really alarmed me was the extent Twilight merchandise dominated the shelves.
(picture coming soon)
we can now safely deduce the sanity level of girls in japan.
im just really appreciative of the fact that noone in my social circle has tried to preach Twilight to me.

WTF DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?

On the widely criticised hypothesis of linguistic relativity,

“Linguists are inflexible and paranoid. They are always arguing among themselves.”
- M alcolm Fiel d, PhD. Cambridge University.

dear professor,
might i point out that when linguists “argue among themselves”, their intentions are very rarely for the sake of condemning each other but to derive from the debate a balanced point of opinion necessary for further in-depth research in the area. i would very highly recommend you Geoffrey Pullum’s writings so that you might understand exactly the sense of humour and type of satirical commentary the linguistics profession prides itself on.

thereby in light of your charming words,
would i be right to categorise you as one of those obnoxious and deluded people who frequently assume too much, cannot be bothered to double-check his facts, and concocts up ad hominem arguments to attack academics?

i might be wrong. kindly advise me if i am.
you voice your claims with such gripping confidence im inclined to believe you are genuinely unaware that your arrogance reflects poorly on your credibility as someone who attempts to teach cultural relativism.

but what can i expect?
when you tell the class to omit writing their names on homework assignments so you can grade them without being influenced by their gender…

you are disgusting.

how on earth can teachers be qualified to teach subjects which have entirely no relation whatsoever with their field of specialization? When schools recruit teachers, do they not have a mandatory requirement which states: Only Professionals????

…speaks volumes about the calibre of my university.

CHARITY SCAM

Monday, May 5th, 2008

so, i discovered i have an ingrained aversion to people who seek perpetual joy in complaining for the sake of it.

a typical convo would be
“im feeling really down/upset/depressed today cuz blahblahblah happened to me again. people never care about my feelings, or stop to think if they are inconveniencing me in the process. im so unlucky everything is just so unfair!”
“what have you done to stop it from happening/ do you need me to help you in some way?”
“haha nah i dont mind it anymore”
“???????????????????? then why are you telling me?!”

im not suggesting that its wrong to complain, or that you should just ignore all your problems and they will magically disappear.
its totally ok esp when you have frustrations (who doesnt?) and you need to vent or seek advice.

but
why are you whining and whining abt something when you dont really feel that way about it. even worse, not doing anything constructive about it?

i’ll tell you why.
because then you will have no bloody thing to whine abt anymore. and if so you will most likely have nothing else to talk abt too. which is actually good! because then i wont have to listen to you yak any longer. and you wouldnt be leeching sympathy off me either.

do i look like the benevolent sort??
malevolent perhaps, but surely not the former, i hope.

let me just be really straightforward here once and for all.
i have enough problems of my own, so if you arent making an important enough point, you arent significant enough for me to have any sort of interest whatsoever in your existence (i cant say life because for me, life actually poses a meaning)

so just scram and go ruin someone else’s day.

and for those in my situation and genuinely fretting…
no more worries, Help‘s here!

assumptions
generalisations
misconceptions
stereotypes

differences
prejudice
inequalities
discrimination

jumping too quickly to conclusions
judging without knowing
criticising everything
understanding nothing

if you are going to assume things anyway, why bother asking me to clarify anything?
